ABSTRACT Teratomas are neoplasms thought to arise from germ cells which usually occur within gonads and are rarely described on extragonadal sites. The present study reports a case of a 15 year old female mongrel dog with a lumbosacral tumor. The tumor was microscopically composed of embryonic tissues with areas containing atypical undifferentiated cells, leading to the diagnosis of a malignant teratoma. Chemical pollution by pesticides has been identified as a possible contributing factor to the massive mortality outbreaks observed in Crassostrea gigas for several years. A previous study demonstrated the vertical transmission of DNA damage by subjecting oyster genitors to the herbicide diuron at environmental concentrations during gametogenesis. This trans-generational effect occurs through damage to genitor-exposed gametes, as measured by the comet-assay. The presence of DNA damage in gametes could be linked to the formation of DNA damage in other germ cells. Traditional medicine provides strong guidance for scientific experiments involving plant products used by the Brazilian people. The species "cipó-cravo" (Tynnanthus fasciculatus) is a plant commonly used either to combat indigestion and stomachaches, or as a general stimulant and aphrodisiac. In this study, the effects of "cipó-cravo" infusion were investigated within the testicular parenchyma of adult Wistar rats.
